pettycoat: The Voice hogs the camera as Rider walks past. (neon nightmare)
I swear, my characterization of The Voice is rapidly devolving into *teleports behind you* Nothing personnel, kid levels of silliness. The guy dresses like he's on his way to a Muppet-themed rave, and here I am trying to turn him into a tragic manipulator. Somebody stop me.

Why does he have to talk so much I'm so bad at dialogue aaah

"Oh, yeah, I could totally finish this chapter by the end of the month. How long's it going to be? 10,000 words?"

As much as I struggle with dialogue, I would have thought writing from the point of view of a mute character would be less frustrating than this. I think I can only write so many variations of "X stared." or "X said nothing." before I start to climb the walls.

The fourth chapter of There the Rain Raised Mountains has just broken 25,000 words. It is now almost twice as long as every previous chapter combined. Have a preview before I dive head-first into revisions:

The Voice: WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS
Rider:
The Voice: I feel like I've failed as a father and can no longer ignore the avalanche of emotional instability currently brewing in my brain.
Rider:
Rider: *eyebrow*
Dramatic thunder! Convenient rainstorms! Hamfisted flower symbolism and paragraphs of navel gazing as Petty once again forgets we're in a sci-fi setting!

I am such a hack.

Since I wasn't able to participate in Yuletide this year, I've signed up for the 2018-2019 Small Fandom Bang. Furi has been out for more than two years and still hasn't broken ten fics on AO3. Let's change that. I'm thinking a prequel series focused around The Song, The Hand, and The Voice? No matter what I write, it's going to involve a lot of colorfully dressed weirdos emotionally manipulating one another. And maybe I'll finish the next chapter of There the Rain Raised Mountains some time this century why has it turned into a novel God help me. Furi has such a unique cast and so much potential for lore exploration. It deserves more fanworks.

So the latest chapter of "There the Rain Raised Mountains" is turning out to be just as long (or longer) than all the previous chapters combined. And Scrivener just crashed and deleted three days of progress.

What are you trying to tell me, karma?
