What is even happening in this series anymore

Vague spoilers for Union Cross.

If I had a time machine and the opportunity to share one piece of information with my past self, I think I would go back to the day I beat Chain of Memories for the very first time, say "Marluxia is someone's onii-chan and is either hundreds of years old or a time traveler," and then I'd watch my own head explode. And I'm all but convinced that Ventus is the traitor and if that's true you got me good Nomura.

Not to forget that as a Union leader of the Dandelions and having taken part in the Keyblade War before Master Ava packed them all off, he presumably is -- or was -- a keybearer.

Right? It's kind of funny to go back to the first game where everyone drones on and on about how there's only one true Keyblade master, and now they're throwing them out to anyone with a name and a marketable face. Maybe Marluxia will get a Keyblade in 3 and then Kairi won't have to worry about having the frilliest weapon in the multiverse.

The retcons after retcons are hilariously dumb as balls but at this point I'm taking the whole zillion keybearer thing as something that the "benighted modern days" (lol) has forgotten about. It's "rare" because there's been a handful of arseholes making their own little hierarchy, on the one hand; and on the other the information came from a small flock of refugees with not much to go on.

That said, I would dearly love to know what Marluxia thought when he saw Roxas. I'd like to know what if anything he remembers, himself.

I, uh. Really need to find a way to catch up with the story of this game. (I played, what, 500 or 600 story levels? But then eventually wandered off and apparently this thing has been going places since I left. o__0 I don't have access to my account anymore so I'll definitely have to just watch the cutscenes somewhere but wow. Wow.) Never change, Kingdom Hearts.

His reaction to Roxas/Ventus is one of the things I'm most interested in seeing for 3. I know Nomura is making most of this up as he goes along, and I would not be shocked if Marluxia has some kind of amnesia during CoM and/or 3, so I guess I can just throw that particular retcon on the pile. What throws me for a loop is the other characters that should have remembered Ventus from Birth By Sleep but never say a word when they're around Roxas. I'm willing to be that most of the cast in 3 is going to wrestle with some retconned memory loss or data-based simulations. I'm expecting at least one resurrected character to be some kind of data copy.

I can never stay mad at Kingdom Hearts. (But seriously, this is just brushing the heap of REVELATIONS that have been dropped on us with the past couple of UX updates.)

You're honestly probably better off just looking up some cutscenes or summaries. Union Cross has some of the worst filler-to-actual-content ratios I've ever seen, and most of the plot bombs that have been dropped on us since then have only shown up in the Japanese version of the game. There's a decent chance the Japanese version isn't going to wrap it up in time for KH3, and the international version is so far behind that Square has basically shrugged their shoulders and told fans to look up unofficial translations (but not without throwing more money at jewels first!). For reference, Mission 725 is when the relevant plot points start filtering in. The latest Japanese update is on Mission 855 while the international version is at something like 815.

A data-copy would be more interesting than "tiiiime travel" which is Nomura's new answer for everything and also dumb as balls. (also dumb: apparently the claim in DDD that more than half the Order was unsuitable is bollocks, because damn near all of them are Norts now *eyeroll*)

One does have to wonder how much the timeline snaps in half if Xemnas and the Seeker are destroyed in 3, or if Nomura's gotten himself some bullshit cover for that already -- because boy howdy does that open up some cans of worms lolololololol

Yeah, that's pretty much one of the reasons I eventually wandered away from it; 600 missions and how many of those had relevant story in them again? Like yeah the disney world stuff is charming but so much of it is also a repeat of things we've seen before and it takes so long for the game to even show that is had any sort of original story. (And the English version had more than enough time to catch up little by little with the Japanese releases...)

I want to see this ridiculousness for myself because as we've established, I love KH's brand of ridiculousness but... yeah...

DDD was the point where I officially gave up on the story. By now, I think I'm in it for the characters rather than the plot. I'm one of those people who will abandon a perfectly functioning series if I don't like any of the characters but will stick around until it's a pile of smoking wreckage if there are characters I like. I have an odd relationship with the Kingdom Hearts games where I thought the plot for the first game was perfectly serviceable, but I didn't like any of the cast, and the games after made the plot more and more convoluted, but I liked the characters more and more. I will say one thing about UX's story--I genuinely have no idea where it's going. I expect to be disappointed with the conclusion, but miracles can happen.
